BC Children's Hospital recipe book
- Safeway made a generous donation of a brand new kitchen for youth programming. A team of BC Children’s Hospital (BCCH) professionals and experts developed resources for learning in the new space.
- The audience for the recipe book is the youth in the BC Children’s Hospital mental health inpatient program. These youth are between 13-18 years of age with varying ability to engage with the resource materials. Patients may have challenges in cognitive ability, medication side affects, dietary concerns/restrictions, problems with appetite, and other issues as a result of state of their mental health.
- 40+ recipes and 10 skills pages.
- Each of these recipes/skills have different versions with modified steps for varying levels of ability.
- A printed format that is approachable, portable, holds interest, and has high readability.
- The program reaches about 80 youth per year.
- The deliverable is print and web ready.
- We met with the BCCH team to confirm the scope and assess the impact of ongoing changes to content. We set timelines and milestones and structured a communication protocol that included email, video conference, phone, and face-to-face meetings.
- We envisioned a comic strip approach to each of the recipes and skills. With each step or sequence illustrated, we made the tasks fun and engaging as well as easy to follow. This visual approach is useful to those youth with literacy and concentration issues.
- Prior to the content being finalized by BCCH, we developed the style and tone of the cartoons and the overall design of the pages. We worked with a couple of the draft recipes and skills pages to advance this design stage. Our team demonstrated a range of styles in order to narrow choices and land on an approved theme.
- We provided the comics in piece and strip form for BCCH to develop an in-house instructors’ manual and other program materials.
In tandem with the development of the cartoon style, we worked with a print supplier to find the best way to output the design. We considered readability, possible need to build custom module sets, ability to build add more recipes and skills over time, materials that will stand up in a kitchen environment, appeal to the audience, expected life of the piece, size/material constraints/efficiencies with the printer, and other contextual inputs.
- The BCCH team had opportunity to feedback at several stages of the design process, commenting on specific cartoons, colours, fonts, and readability.
- The recipe books going into use with patients in May 2016. Results will be posted to this case study in the summer.
We worked with Spryberry on a project for the mental health programs at BC Children’s Hospital, and were very impressed with the quality of their work, their dedication to their clients, and their genuine passion for the project. From the first time we met with Dana and Tara, we knew that Spryberry was going to be a great fit with the project and what we were envisioning. Our project involved a collaborative team environment, which sometimes meant getting lots of different feedback and trying to balance multiple perspectives. The Spryberry team has excellent communication skills, is always open and responsive to ideas, and is able to effectively manage tight timelines. They demonstrated great flexibility, and were proactive and solution-oriented when we were faced with difficult decisions or changes in the project plan. In the end, we couldn’t be happier with the final product, and we are so excited for the clinical team to start sharing the resource that was developed with patients and parents.
